Iris Wang

Fashion & Costume Designer
From Concept to Creation

Breathing life into stories—one stitch at a time.

I graduated from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in 2009, majoring in Costume Design for Theatre, Film, and Television. My career began in the world of stage costume, where I learned to blend imagination with structure — storytelling with fabric. Later, I founded my own design studio in Shanghai and transitioned into custom fashion design, merging traditional aesthetics with contemporary style. With over 15 years of professional experience, I’ve designed garments for clients with diverse personalities and needs. I believe that style is only a language — what truly matters is the person wearing it. That’s why my work spans a wide range of styles: each piece reflects the story, character, and spirit of the individual. Now based in the U.S., I’m beginning a new chapter — bringing my love for fashion, craftsmanship, and cross-cultural storytelling to a new audience. I'm excited to continue designing with heart, purpose, and curiosity.

Project Story 01:
A Wedding Dress Reimagined

They are a couple from two corners of the world — he from Australia, she from the United States — and I had the honor of attending their wedding in Italy. After the celebration, the bride told me something that stayed with me: "I don’t want my wedding dress to be something I wear only once."So, we gave her dress a second life. I transformed it into a tailored jacket and a short formal dress — two pieces she could wear again, not just for special occasions, but as a way to carry the memory of that beautiful day into her everyday life.To me, this is what clothing can do — preserve moments, tell stories, and stay with us long after the celebration is over.

Project Story 02:Dressing the Editor-in-Chief

Over the years, I’ve had the honor of designing custom pieces for Manya Koetse, a writer, Sinologist, and editor-in-chief of What’s on Weibo. Whether she’s delivering a keynote at an international conference or appearing on television, she always trusts me to create looks that help her feel confident and beautifully present herself to the world. One of the most special projects was a formal outfit I designed for her royal dinner with the king and queen of the Netherlands. The garment needed to meet the highest standards of etiquette — elegant, appropriate, yet still personal. I created a look that followed the formal dress code, while letting her stand out with grace and distinction. Our collaboration over the past decade has been filled with mutual trust, creativity, and joy. For me, fashion is not just about making clothes — it’s about helping people tell their stories, no matter where life takes them.

Project Story 03: Rock Meets Tradition

This look was created for Second Hand Rose, one of China’s most iconic rock bands. We've been collaborating for over ten years, and every project brings me so much joy.For this music festival performance, I drew inspiration from vintage British rock and blended it with Chinese elements. I hand-drew a dragon motif and transformed it into embroidery, adding studs, sequins, and detachable fringe for drama and movement. The sleeves and tassels were designed to be easily removed on stage — so the singer could stay cool mid-performance without missing a beat. It’s a piece that roars with energy, culture, and the spirit of live music.
